An elevated view across Howth village and harbour in North County Dublin, towards Ireland’s Eye beyond, capturing the layered relationship between community, landscape and sea.
The viewpoint was arrived at only after a number of visits to Howth and experiments with different locations and perspectives. The intention was to find an angle that allowed the harbour and village to sit naturally within the larger coastal landscape, rather than allowing any single element to dominate. The work was then developed from digitally prepared source material before being extensively worked by hand with acrylic paint and textured media.
On the day the final view was captured, the early-summer sunlight provided an unexpected bonus. The clear light brought brightness and definition to the village and harbour while helping separate the layers of foreground, water and Ireland’s Eye in the distance.
The resulting painting is as much about the geography of Howth — the meeting of village, working harbour, sea and island — as it is about the individual buildings or boats within the scene.
