Glass Bead Master began with photographs taken from the upper deck of a bus on a wet winter night. Through the moving, rain covered window, lights, buildings and vegetation merged into deep greens, turquoise and muted earth tones. The result is the largest and most intricate of five related paintings. Its title draws on Hermann Hesse’s The Glass Bead Game and its search for connections among seemingly separate forms of knowledge. Here those connections are visual: water, artificial light and the city continually reshape one another, leaving the viewer to find a path through the layered surface.
