In the City of the Prophet moves between a city seen from above and a more inward landscape of memory and connection. Green, blue and turquoise fragments cross a dense, dark surface, while warmer marks briefly illuminate its fissures and pathways. The title draws loosely on Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet and the imagined city from which Almustafa departs; the painting does not illustrate the book. It leaves streets, roots and waterways open to interpretation. Among the works on this site, it brings the recurring interest in networks and changing perspectives into a distinctly human setting.

Further reflections on the Painting working through the main themes in the book.
Inspired by Kahlil Gibran’s celebrated 1923 work, The Prophet, this painting explores the many dimensions of human existence through an abstract landscape of colour, movement and texture.
In Gibran’s book, the prophet Almustafa prepares to depart the city of Orphalese. Before leaving, he responds to questions from its inhabitants on the fundamental experiences of life: love, freedom, work, joy and sorrow, self-knowledge, spirituality and death.
