Barren Land – Disturbed Sky reduces a landscape to sky, horizon and earth. Above the heavily worked foreground, the golden light feels beautiful but unsettled, as though the atmosphere itself has shifted. The painting arose from concern for familiar landscapes under changing weather patterns; it is an imaginative response, not a prediction of one place or event. Its companion, Barren Land – Fevered, brings the sky closer and intensifies that sense of pressure. Together, the two works ask how warmth and light can carry both attraction and unease.
