During a 24 hour observation of native woodland in County Wicklow, I returned repeatedly to an old moss covered stump. This smaller painting draws attention to its surface: decaying timber, soft moss and the new growth taking hold there. At this scale, the familiar woodland scene becomes an intimate record of change. Its larger companion places the stump in the fading light of dusk. Seen together, the paintings trace how a single subject can reveal different details and moods as both light and viewpoint change.
