This larger painting developed from a 24 hour period of observation in a native County Wicklow woodland in May 2026. I returned to the same stump as the light changed, watching moss and low vegetation gradually take on different colours and shapes. Here the scene approaches dusk: the light falls, the forms soften and the woodland closes in. The old stump is both a remnant of a tree and a place of new growth. A smaller companion painting examines the same cycle of decay and renewal at closer range.
