A dramatic abstract composition in fiery reds, deep blacks and muted greys. Layered impasto and gestural marks form a dense central structure, while a shaft of light introduces movement, tension and a sense of emergence from darkness.

Although not based on a particular landscape, the painting shares a recurring theme with much of the work on this site: the interaction between light, surface and the natural world. The heavily worked texture can suggest rock, scorched earth, exposed strata or a landscape under pressure, while the break of light introduces a sense of change and possibility. Rather than defining a particular place, the painting leaves the viewer somewhere between landscape and abstraction, allowing forms to emerge and disappear within the surface.
