A study of movement across an exposed landscape, where tangled grasses, muted earth colours and a distant horizon evoke the persistent influence of wind and weather.
The painting was inspired by an unusual winter visit to an Irish blanket bog. A dense blanket of fog had settled across the landscape, the grasses were frozen and there was an extraordinary stillness in the air. Familiar features of the bog gradually disappeared into the mist, leaving only fragments of vegetation, muted colour and the suggestion of a horizon. The work was then developed from digitally prepared source material before being extensively worked by hand with acrylic paint and textured media.
The combination of frozen ground, fog and complete stillness transformed the landscape into something almost otherworldly. This painting concentrates on the intimacy of that experience — the grasses and textures immediately underfoot gradually dissolving into the soft, indistinct landscape beyond.
